Appointments may be scheduled by calling our office at 706-310-9046. For new client appointments, you will be given access to a secure client portal where you will complete and submit intake paperwork before your first session. You cannot be seen until this paperwork is submitted. For adult clients, the first appointment serves as an important time for assessing and understanding the problems for which the client is seeking assistance. For minors, the evaluation process is a two-step process with initial separate appointments with the parent or guardian and then the other with the child or teenager. These initial evaluation appointments are important to planning appropriate care and treatment.
After the initial evaluation, the counselor or therapist will make treatment recommendations and work with the client and/or families to set goals and schedule follow up appointments. If a different type of service is needed other than which Bethel Haven, Inc is able to provide, we will make the appropriate referral or provide the client or family with suitable information for obtaining the needed services.

What is Bethel Haven, Inc’s philosophy and approach to counseling and therapy?
Bethel Haven, Inc is a Christian non-profit organization with the purpose of providing help, hope and healing to distressed children, individuals and families through professional therapeutic services. At Bethel Haven, Inc, we believe that counseling and therapy provide an individual and/or family a unique opportunity for growth and healing. A primary and necessary part of counseling and therapy is the collaborative relationship between a therapist and client that is based upon mutual respect and agreed upon treatment goals. How do I know when it is time to seek help?
Whether you are struggling with a major crisis or handling a small, seemingly insignificant issue, counseling can be beneficial for navigating the ups and downs of life. As individuals, we are innately created as social beings and therefore need others to help us get through rough patches as well as challenge our points of view and responses. If you are unsure of whether it is time to seek help, our counselors are happy to meet with you to answer your questions and discuss ways that we might be able to assist.
What will the first session be like?
As clients come in for their first appointment, we expect them to be a little nervous and unsure of what to expect. Our hope is to help clients feel comfortable and welcome when they arrive. We do ask that all clients complete forms to help us gather accurate and complete information, which helps us provide appropriate care and safety for our clients and therapists. During the initial visit, the client will have an opportunity to discuss further the reason(s) for seeking counseling, and the therapist will provide an orientation to the therapy and counseling process so that the client will have a better understanding of what to expect going forward.
How often do I need to see my counselor and for how long?
Our clients may participate in short, medium or long-term therapy. Some clients may have a specific focused, problem that is resolved after several months, while others may need counseling and care for longer periods of time. To get the most from the counseling relationship, in the beginning phases of work, it is best if a client can meet with the counselor on a weekly to every other week basis so that too much time does not pass in between. This keeps the relationship open and the therapist and client up to date so that the focus can remain on the working needs of the client. Depending on the severity of a problem, we may recommend more frequent sessions especially during time of crises or when dealing with a more complex problem. Our goal at Bethel Haven, Inc is to help clients gain the necessary tools and insight so that they may leave stronger, more confident and able to function independently.
What is Play therapy and how is it different than Talk Therapy?
Play therapy is an approach in which a therapist uses toys, games, stories, art supplies and other play materials to understand, communicate with and help children. While adults most often benefit by traditional talk therapy, children are relatively limited in their ability to understand and verbalize their thoughts and feelings. Therefore, play therapy is a non-threatening approach that uses the “language of play” as a means to express what they are experiencing, feeling and thinking. Some adults and teenagers also find that expressive therapies such as play, art and music provide powerful and meaningful ways to access and uncover their feelings as well.
How does Family Counseling Work?
Family counseling provides an opportunity for family members to repair and enhance relationships and communication in a safe and therapeutic setting. The focus for this type of counseling is to help each member of the family understand the other members’ perspectives while becoming a healthier individual within the family sphere. This takes place through learning how to better relate to one another in family counseling sessions.
What is Grief Counseling?
Everybody at one time or another has a loss of some kind. Anytime we lose something that we value we experience loss. Sometimes we lose relationships, people, money, objects, opportunities, places (due to moving) and many other things. There is no real limit to what can be lost. When we lose something, we go through a process called grief where we mourn, bargain, get angry at times, and do other things to try to deal with the pain of the loss. It takes time to deal with loss, and sometimes we need help to keep moving through the process. Grief counseling is when a client meets with a professional familiar with the steps of grief to help the person navigate through the grieving process. This is important especially when there has been a significant loss or even traumatic loss that leaves an individual feeling overwhelmed and drowning in the emotions associated with grief. For those who are having difficulty with grief, early intervention is important as unresolved grief can lead to difficulties later in life. This is also especially important for grieving children who if left alone to grieve maybe hindered in their development into healthy adulthood.
How are counseling fees determined?
Bethel Haven, Inc is dedicated to providing quality, professional therapeutic services that are affordable for all clients. One of our goals for serving the community is to be able to remove financial barriers that might otherwise keep clients from receiving professional counseling and care. Bethel Haven, Inc is able to offset client costs through various fundraising activities and grants. All new client initial evaluations include an additional fee of $25.00 in addition to the session fee. Session fees vary according to the type of session and counselor (see details under "About Us"). For clients that encounter some type of hardship, we also work to arrange an appropriate payment plan agreement so that needed care can be received, and some churches are willing to help members with the minimal fees that we do charge. At Bethel Haven, Inc, we believe that finances should never prevent someone from getting help that is needed, and we are happy to make our services accessible as a ministry to the community.
