Allison Mauldin, Therapist

Introduction:
“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” ~Maya Angelou, Author
No matter how dark, difficult, and distressing the circumstances, there is always hope. The book of Proverbs tells us that “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life” (Proverbs 13:12). Please know you are not alone on your journey. If you need an empathetic ear to help navigate life’s challenges, uncertainties, transitions, and tough times, I would be privileged to come alongside you and help you become “unstuck,” so you can move forward with courage and hope, developing strategies and techniques to safely regulate your emotions, begin healing past trauma, and/or exploring your options to show up as the healthiest version of yourself.
“Courage doesn’t happen when you have all the answers. It happens when you are ready to face the questions you have been avoiding your whole life.” ~Shannon L. Alder, Author & Therapist
Background:
Allison L. Mauldin graduated from Liberty University, a CACREP accredited program, with high distinction, securing an MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. She is a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC) and is trained in 12STR (Strategic Trauma & Abuse Recovery System), which utilizes a structured trauma model to assist clients in processing trauma through the written word. Previously, Allison graduated from the University of Georgia (UGA) in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education and has experience working with children and adolescents over the past few decades. Allison also holds an Associates of Arts degree in Spanish, so when the Olympics arrived in her hometown of Atlanta in ‘96, she traveled abroad to study in Spain and attend the University of Salamanca. Additionally, Allison has experience as a Barton Tutor, tutoring students academically who have struggled with reading, writing, dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, and other diagnosed learning challenges.
Philosophy and Modalities of Therapy:
As a counselor, Allison strives to first build an authentic, strong therapeutic relationship with each client, partnering with the client to create a personal growth plan. Rather than simply telling the client what to do, Allison creates an atmosphere of mutual collaboration where the client is free to examine their choices in a nonjudgmental space when facing current or future life decisions, when processing past traumas or life’s challenges, and when deciding for themselves which path is best to take.
To this end, Allison utilizes and integrates a myriad of modalities into the therapeutic process, such as narrative therapy, bibliotherapy, various creative expressions, such as incorporating art, music, or journaling, internal family systems (IFS), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and other beneficial techniques and tools.
As such, and no matter the circumstance encountered, an individual can “be transformed by the renewing of [their] mind” (Romans 12:2) and learn to gradually shift their thoughts regarding the circumstance to bring about different emotions, actions, and outcomes in their lives. As Viktor Frankl, a psychiatrist, philosopher, and Holocaust survivor, learned at Auschwitz, “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”
Special Areas of Interest:
Allison’s special areas of interest consist of working with children, female adolescents, college age females, women’s mental health concerns, self-concept, spiritual growth, life transitions, anxiety, depression, stress-related issues, PTSD, career/vocational development, developing coping strategies and emotional regulation tools, boundary setting, family of origin work, divorce recovery, trauma-related concerns, narcissistic abuse recovery, and emotional/psychological abuse recovery. On a lighter note, Allison enjoys hiking in the great outdoors, reading and watching historically inspired books and movies, spending time with her family and friends, cuddling with her fur babies, and drinking chocolate drizzled café mochas. Also, go Dawgs!
